Provides Support for Community Service Project at the SkillsUSA Conference

Leesburg, Va., June 15, 2023 — The U.S. Air Force, an official partner of SkillsUSA, will provide support for SkillsUSA’s National Leadership & Skills Conference including sponsorship and participation in a community service project on Friday, June 23 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. They will also provide support to SkillsUSA TECHSPO, as well as general mission support.

During the community service project, 550 SkillsUSA students will apply their skills to serve the Atlanta community by participating in the SkillsUSA “Build Skills – Do Good – Complete the Cycle” project. The student participants will work in teams to construct children’s bicycles which will then be presented to local children.

Registrants for the community service project have also been challenged to collect up to 1,000 new pairs of socks to be donated to CHRIS 180, a local Atlanta organization. CHRIS 180 helps children, young adults and families who have experienced trauma to help change the direction of their lives to become more productive, self-sufficient members of the community through mental health counseling, training and by providing safe housing and skill building.

“We sincerely thank the U.S. Air Force for supporting the community service effort in Atlanta as part of the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference,” said Chelle Travis, executive director at SkillsUSA. “This annual project is exciting for members as they demonstrate their skills and their commitment to serving others. It will be wonderful to watch these excited children as they receive their new bicycles.”

“The Air Force is an organization like none other, made up of diverse Airmen from the active, Guard, Reserve, and civilians serving full time or part time, in or out of uniform. We are excited for this year’s SkillsUSA partnership and having the opportunity to interact with this motivated and inspiring group of young people,” said Lara Stott, HQE senior advisor for Air Force Recruiting Service Marketing Department.

About SkillsUSA

SkillsUSA is America’s proud champion of the skilled trades. It’s a student-led partnership of education and industry that’s building the skilled workforce our nation depends on with graduates who are career ready, day one. Representing nearly 380,000 career and technical education students and teachers, SkillsUSA chapters thrive in middle schools, high schools and college/postsecondary institutions nationwide. SkillsUSA’s mission empowers students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders, and responsible community members. That mission is accomplished through the SkillsUSA Framework of Personal Skills, Workplace Skills and Technical Skills Grounded in Academics, which is integrated into classroom curriculum. Through Framework instruction, students develop the character-shaping leadership skills — teamwork, communication, professionalism and more — that successful careers and lives demand. At the same time, students hone their high-level technical skills against current industry standards in more than 130 skilled trade areas, from 3-D Animation to Welding. The result? Focused, confident and highly skilled graduates who are ready to work, ready to lead and ready to make a difference in our schools, workplaces and communities. A vital solution to the skills gap, where more in-demand skilled trades positions are available than qualified professionals to fill them, SkillsUSA has served over 14 million difference-making members since 1965.
