Next Generation Employability Skill-Building Curricula to Launch in Fall 2017 — Preview at NLSC

Working in teams, understanding leadership and communicating clearly are required in any career. However, these skills were never easy to teach — until now. SkillsUSA, an innovator in educational resources for career and technical students, will introduce SkillsUSA Career Essentials at the 2017 National Leadership and Skills Conference. This suite of programs takes teaching career readiness to a new level. SkillsUSA Career Essentials is the next generation of employability skill-building curricula designed for today’s students. The suite advances the impact of the SkillsUSA Framework and has three main components: Foundations, Essentials and Assessments. The suite rolls out for the 2017-18 school year to help teachers prepare more students to be career-ready. The name demonstrates that these essential pieces are now under one learning continuum. The end result is a completely new online curriculum created to facilitate the development of SkillsUSA Framework skills in students. Attendees at the 2017 SkillsUSA National Conference will be the first to preview these materials at the SkillsUSA Career Essentials Booth in the Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC) North Wing Lobby. Our conference preview will allow instructors and students to see sample materials, get product and pricing details and ask questions. Schools can be among the first in the nation to enhance CTE programs with this career-readiness curricula. The booth will be staffed all week to provide product information and demonstrations. Learn even more about Career Essentials at the Advisors’ Call to Action, a special session on Wednesday, June 21 for SkillsUSA instructors and school administrators, led by executive director Tim Lawrence. This update on SkillsUSA priorities will include the SkillsUSA Career Essentials suite and the positioning of SkillsUSA as a skills gap solution. Don’t miss the teacher breakfast in South Wing Lobby A at 7:45 a.m., followed by the session in KEC B101-B102. There will be a gift for all attendees.
The SkillsUSA Career Essentials Suite Product Overview
The SkillsUSA Career Essentials suite is a solution to industry and education needs in preparing career-ready students who are productive and promotable. Career Essentials ensures your students have the foundational skills, attitudes and values that help them stand out from other job applicants in the skilled labor marketplace SkillsUSA Career Essentials: Foundations builds an awareness of the SkillsUSA Framework, which includes personal, workplace and technical skills grounded in academics — all essential to a successful career and technical education program. This turnkey curriculum includes 29 teacher-facilitated lesson plans based on Common Core State Standards. SkillsUSA Career Essentials: Foundations is free for professional members. (Formerly called Career Readiness Curriculum or CRC, the content has not changed. SkillsUSA Career Essentials: Experiences is designed as a flexible two-year program. Year one includes nine fundamental experiences. Year two continues with five advanced experiences and one capstone experience. Instructors can align these experiences with what is already taking place in classrooms. Each experience spans two-to-three weeks and includes a 30-minute instructor-led kickoff event, followed by student individual work or group projects. E-learning modules provide just-in-time, bite-sized learning throughout the experience. Created to facilitate the development of SkillsUSA Framework skills in students, it is the next level of instruction after the Career Readiness Curriculum (CRC). (SkillsUSA Career Essentials: Experiences replaces the Professional Development Program or PDP.) SkillsUSA Career Essentials: Assessments provides assessments for career and technical education that are supported by industry and provide a path to additional professional certifications and entry into the workforce. These assessments also help instructors demonstrate the quality of their programs. More than 40 technical and employability assessments are available. Assessments are supported by a comprehensive system that makes administration simple. They can be used for end-of-unit, end-of-course or end-of-program assessment. The rich-in-media assessments offer multiple-choice or drag-and-drop questions, delivered in random order with photographs, videos, animations and illustrations. Each assessment has 50 questions and takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. (SkillsUSA Career Essentials: Assessments was formerly called the Work Force Ready System Skill Connect Assessments. The Employability Assessment has changed, but all others remain the same.)
