Leader, Visionary and Champion of the Skilled Trades

Chelle TravisChelle Travis is the executive director of SkillsUSA, the #1 workforce development organization for students. Travis has led the organization since 2019 and has overseen record-setting growth in membership and partner development. Travis’ professional experience is rooted in a wide variety of academic settings, from secondary institutions to universities to technical and community colleges. She also previously served as the director of SkillsUSA Tennessee. Travis has collaborated with every category of career and technical education (CTE) stakeholders to design curricula, develop programs, draft legislation and more. The goal of her efforts remains the same: to help students realize their full personal and professional potential while elevating the value of CTE and bringing it to the forefront of educational discourse.

Leading the Mission: Impact and Vision

Since taking the helm in Nov. 2019, Chelle has led SkillsUSA through rapid change with several notable accomplishments, while maintaining a steadfast commitment to its members and mission.   

  • Largest student and professional membership in the organization’s history at 440,100 members in 2024-25. 
  • Expanded SkillsUSA’s partner network, with the largest corporate and individual giving at $8,130,426 in 2025. 
  • Implemented a bold strategic plan, Drive to 65, to propel the organization forward and meet workforce development challenges. 
  • Navigated the COVID-19 pandemic in first months as executive director, remaining agile and nimble to ensure continuity in student programming. 
  • Hosted the organization’s first-ever virtual National Leadership & Skills Conference in 2021, followed by a move to a new host city in Atlanta, now with record-breaking attendance at 19,000+ attendees.  
  • Implemented SkillsUSA Pathful, an all-in-one career exploration and workforce readiness platform, to serve as a work-based learning intermediary.  
  • Celebrated the organization’s milestone 60th anniversary with the launch of the SkillsUSA Heritage Hub 
  • Launched the GIS mapping solution, providing greater insight into untapped potential nationwide. 
  • Continued the organization’s long-standing partnership with WorldSkills International, bringing home two bronze medals in Welding in 2022 and 2024.  
  • Published The SkillsUSA Advantage Report, in collaboration with the Student Research Foundation, underscoring the benefits of membership in SkillsUSA. 

Chelle’s impact on workforce development extends far beyond SkillsUSA through her service on several national boards and committees that directly influence CTE programming and policy.
