Going for Gold, SkillsUSA Helps Volvo CE North America Celebrate Articulated Hauler’s 50th Anniversary

A Grand Drive to End Poverty Everywhere

Lehi (Utah) High School students collected one “grand” to support Let’s End Poverty and to spread awareness worldwide. Within two weeks, these students collected and sorted bags of donations including clothing, shoes, books and household items and filled 1,000 plastic garbage bags. “If you don’t do anything, you can’t control the government. It’s your right as a citizen. You might as well use it,” says Colin Clark, a graphic and visual communications student. Clark was one of many who took advantage of the voter-registration station set up by SkillsUSA students at Southern Adirondack Education Center in Hudson Falls, N.Y. Not Down the Drain

Caitlin Monagle and McKenzie Hartman, environmental technology students at Minuteman High School in Lexington, Mass., have installed decals at catch basins that direct storm water into nearby Morses Pond, a local recreation area. The decals alert residents to not dump paints, trash and other pollutants into drains. Monagle and Hartman worked closely with a local Boy Scout troop as well as George Saraceno, Wellesley (Mass.) Department of Public Works senior engineer, who coordinates a townwide effort to educate people about stormwater management. The students competed in SkillsUSA’s Community Action Project event. A Virtual Step Back in Time

In Grand Rapids, Mich., students at Kent Career Technical Center and Kent Innovation High School are collaborating on a virtual tour of Historic Fort Wayne (Ind.), site of a battle during the War of 1812. In a cross-discipline effort, students photographed re-enactors, built models and then created digital 3-D replicas for the tour. Once it’s complete, students everywhere will be able to tour the fort via a Web browser. The results are in, and SkillsUSA is thrilled to announce the Lowe’s/SkillsUSA Social Media Challenge winners!  1st Place, $25,000 community service grant — Palestine High School, Palestine, Texas 2nd Place, $10,000 community service grant — Capital Region BOCES, Albany, N.Y. 3rd Place, $8,000 community service grant — Palm Beach Charter Schools/Inlet Grove Community High School, Riviera, Fla.
