Pies and Bats, All-American Gifts

Photo: Karen Ward, SkillsUSA Massachusetts executive director Baseball and apple pie highlighted an All-American, barbecue-themed luncheon at the recent WorldSkills General Assembly, co-hosted by Skills/Compétences Canada and SkillsUSA. Culinary arts students at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Upton, Mass., baked 300 individually wrapped, mini apple pies for the gathering in Niagara Falls, Canada. To truly paint a picture of American culture, the international delegates also received Louisville Slugger mini baseball bats and baseballs from SkillsUSA, the official U.S. representative to the WorldSkills organization. Automotive Students Keep Folks Moving

At Washburn Technical Institute of Technology (WIT) in Topeka, Kan., students in auto collision repair and auto service technology work with licensed technicians to refurbish cars for families in need. Since 2011, as part of the Recycled Rides Program, students, their mentors and volunteers have repaired 16 donated vehicles. WIT is the first school in the nation to partner with the National Auto Body Council to be a Recycled Rides training facility. Applicants for the cars include individuals with medical needs, victims of domestic violence or natural disasters, low-income families and needy students. Read More
