Respectful Engagement at SkillsUSA Events

Overview

SkillsUSA strives to make our functions an empowering, safe, and accessible experience for everyone to highlight the power of Career and Technical Education and the skilled trades in students’ lives. This Conference Code of Conduct applies to all SkillsUSA national functions. All individuals who attend, compete, judge, speak at, volunteer, or exhibit (collectively, “participant”) at a SkillsUSA function agree to comply with this Code of Conduct.

SkillsUSA reserves the right to take any action necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, including removing individuals without a refund.

Expected Behavior:

  • Model professionalism: Maintain clear and professional boundaries in all interactions with minors and adults, and be mindful of power dynamics.

  • Be respectful and considerate: Treat all participants in a welcoming manner free from any form of discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or retaliation. Recognize that everyone has different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

  • Communicate thoughtfully: Engage in constructive discussions about ideas and concepts. Be mindful of language, eliminate personal attacks and inflammatory and discriminatory remarks.

  • Engage in responsible social media use.

  • Be collaborative: Share your knowledge and expertise in a way that is helpful and supportive.

  • Respect local rules and laws: Follow the rules and policies of events, hotels, facilities, and any venue associated with a function.

  • Remain alert: Promptly notify security personnel and SkillsUSA staff if you notice a potentially dangerous situation or someone who appears in distress.

  • Respect confidentiality: If information is shared in confidence, respect that confidence. Respect the personal privacy of minors.

Reporting Incidents:

If you experience or witness any violation of this Code of Conduct, please report it immediately to SkillsUSA. All reports will be treated confidentially to the extent possible.

Enforcement:

  • SkillsUSA will investigate all reports of violations of this Code of Conduct.

  • SkillsUSA reserves the right to take any action deemed necessary and appropriate, including immediate removal without warning or refund, in response to any incident of unacceptable behavior. Additionally, SkillsUSA reserves the right to prohibit attendance at any future function, online or in person. If there is a question of immediate danger, action may be taken to ensure the safety of all participants regardless of any procedure that may follow.
