2009 Community Service Projects at NLSC
Partnering at the national conference since 2002, Timberland PRO and SkillsUSA have worked together to engage more than 7,200 students, advisors and alumni in over 42,000 hours of community service. This year, volunteers will work on several different service projects, all of which will have a positive impact on the environment in Kansas City.

SkillsUSA participants will work in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity Kansas City to build new and rehabilitate existing homes for families in need while adhering to the latest G.R.E.E.N. building standards (which focuses on finding grassroots organizations committed to sustainability, reusing and recycling materials, engaging relative stakeholders, educating participants and forwarding Timberland’s goals of carbon neutrality). Volunteers also will make a significant impact through Community Greening Projects designed to revitalize outdoor areas and play space, as well as provide education to local communities on the value of preserving and expanding these spaces.

The project kicks off for registrants on the New Grand Ballroom Portico at 7 a.m. Buses will leave for the service sites at 8 a.m. and return to the portico at 2:30 p.m.

2008 Community Service Projects at NLSC
Since the partnership began in 2002, Timberland PRO and SkillsUSA have worked together to engage more than 6,700 students, advisors and alumni who have served over 40,000 total hours of community service. SkillsUSA participants have had a hands-on opportunity to use the skills they have learned in the classroom while giving back to a local community. Participants have engaged in activities such as working with facilities for wayward teens, building homes, improving the condition of affordable housing developments, and revitalizing neighborhoods and parks.

In 2008, volunteers had the unique opportunity to work on several different service projects, all which will had a positive impact on the environment in the Kansas City community. SkillsUSA participants worked in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, Kansas City to build new and rehabilitate existing homes for families in need while adhering to the latest G.R.E.E.N. building standards in the industry. Volunteers also made a significant impact through Community Greening Projects designed to revitalize outdoor areas and play space, as well as provide education to local communities on the value of preserving and expanding these spaces.

All projects were developed according to the G.R.E.E.N. standard, which focuses on finding grassroots organizations committed to sustainability, reusing and recycling materials, engaging relative stakeholders, educating participants and forwarding Timberland’s goals of carbon neutrality.
