SkillsUSA members joined forces with the school Student Council to educate 7th graders about career choices offered at A.P. Fatherree Vocational School. Non-traditional students (for example, females in drafting, females in collision repair, males in Culinary Arts ...) spent an entire day in each vocational class learning skills of the trade.
The lucky 7th graders who were able to attend submitted essays in their career discovery classes; the winning essay writers were able to spend a special day at the vocational center. SkillsUSA members and the other vocational clubs took part- they expanded their Student2Student mentoring program to involve everyone at the school this year. SkillsUSA members helped other club leaders develop a lesson plan relevant to each class and allowed the students to experience what "hands on learning is all about."
They held the event on February 13 in honor of SkillsUSA Week. They sent club officers around to each training area to talk about our SkillsUSA club as well as the national organization. They used the PSA found on the national website. After everyone was finished with the lessons, they provided lunch with officials from the school system and they were honored with the presence of Dr. Bill McGrew from the Mississippi Department of Education. SkillsUSA Club President Kaitlyn Garvin read the new proclamation declaring February as National Career and Technical Education month for Jones County; then Superintendent Steve Thrash signed the proclamation. Everyone had a great day.
