CONNECTICUT
Ella T. Grasso S.E. Technical High School in Groton
SkillsUSA membership: 591 students and teachers
Project: SkillsUSA members will build a gatehouse, picnic tables, planters, lay woodchips around a playground and landscape various areas at a local beach and park that is widely used by the community.
GEORGIA
Hiram High School in Hiram
SkillsUSA membership: 98 students and teachers
Project: SkillsUSA members will create a playground and outdoor seating area for the women and children who live at the Shepherd's Rest Safe House for Battered Women and Children, which is located in Paulding County. This will provide a safe and comfortable area for the residents to relax and watch their children play.
Statesboro High School in Statesboro
SkillsUSA membership: 51 students and teachers
Project: SkillsUSA members will renovate a full service cafeteria at the local Boys and Girls Club. This project will update the kitchen and food prep areas of the facility, expand food storage areas and provide a place for children to sit and enjoy their meals.
MASSACHUSETTS
Hyde Park High School in Hyde Park
SkillsUSA membership: 18 students and teachers
Project: SkillsUSA students will conduct a safety awareness campaign that will focus on home fire safety and escape planning. This will also include a poster and smoke detector design contest, development of a youth safety club, construction of a smoke detector display, students assisting with installing smoke detectors in homes, and conducting a community safety day.
MINNESOTA
Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount
SkillsUSA membership: 105 students and teachers
Project: SkillsUSA members will construct new brick and block signs to communicate messages to the community and passing commuters, along with seating and a rest stop for the heavily-traveled bike and walking path. They will also develop a native habitat learning area with educational plaques.
MISSOURI
Herndon Career Center in Raytown
SkillsUSA membership: 350 students and teachers
Project: Students will partner with Westport High School on a Schools helping Schools service project to restore a 100 year-old inner city high school in metropolitan Kansas City, Missouri. Students plan to do finish tenant work (prep, paint, replace blinds, ceiling tiles), electrical work (capping and closing exposed wiring and repairing hallway lights), grounds work (landscaping), student locker repair and replacement, and replace broken window air conditioning units in classrooms.
NEBRASKA
Metropolitan Community College in Omaha
SkillsUSA membership: 86 students and teachers
Project: Students will support a series of community service projects that form the learning foundation of Metropolitan Community College's "MCC Cares Home Repair" class. Upon completion of the spring academic session, a minimum of five homes will be adapted to improve handicapped accessibility, over 500 hours of donated labor time will be contributed, and an estimated $18,000 worth of construction costs will be saved for area residents who are part of this community program.
OHIO
Mahoning County Career and Technical Center in Canfield
SkillsUSA membership: 420 students and teachers
Project: Students will construct a nature and fitness trail upon the school property. The trail will be approximately 1.8 miles in length and will have a number of exercise stations along its path. This trail will traverse wooded areas, wetlands, and open fields. The trail will also enable access to a 1/4-acre pond on the property. Near the pond, the students will construct several rest areas where users can enjoy the tranquility of the outdoor space. The project also includes an outdoor classroom for use by local schools.
OREGON
Sabin-Schellenberg Center in Milwaukie
SkillsUSA membership: 200 students and teachers
Project: Students will construct 60 hog pens inside the swine barn of the local Clackamas County Fairgrounds. The fair is a large community event and the old pens were dangerous and allowed animals to escape and cause damage in surrounding neighborhoods.
Santiam Canyon School District in Mill City
SkillsUSA membership: 200 students and teachers
Project: Students will construct a 24 x 48 pole building for their Wolverines Working for You hands-on alternative education class. This non-traditional classroom is designed to instill the value of giving one's time for the betterment of the community, teaching valuable job skills and encouraging students to complete their high school education. The program is in need of a building where they can store equipment. This will also provide an area for students to perform auto repairs, welding and light construction projects.
RHODE ISLAND
Woonsocket Area Career & Tech Center in Woonsocket
SkillsUSA membership: 534 students and teachers
Project: SkillsUSA members will build a press box and two dugouts at their community athletic field. The field is used by more than 365 middle school and high school athletes, as well as more than 1,500 youngsters from age two to adult who play in community leagues. The local Special Olympic program also uses it each year.
TENNESSEE
Cordova High School in Memphis
SkillsUSA membership: 99 students and teachers
Project: Students will create a playground and outdoor seating area adjacent to the school that will serve the families of school athletes as well as two adjacent neighborhoods that do not have playgrounds. The project will include a play area with two swing sets, picnic tables, landscaping, benches and a walkway.
Tennessee Tech Center at Hohenwald in Hohenwald
SkillsUSA membership: 369 students and teachers
Project: Students will create a fitness trail with exercise stations to promote better physical health in the community. The project will be located on the Lewis County Intermediate and Middle School grounds so that students in grades K-8 will have daily access to the equipment. The residents of Lewis County would also be able to use the equipment after school hours.
VERMONT
St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury
SkillsUSA membership: 43 students and teachers
Project: Students will upgrade storage for the Northeast Kingdom Youth Services, a nonprofit community group that serves local families experiencing hardship. They currently have problems storing donated clothing and furniture to distribute to families due to water leakage problems and heating issues. Students will weatherize the basement area; install heating units; renovate the storage space to include a new concrete floor and additional lighting; and upgrade storage capacity by constructing shelving in a second storage room.
VIRGINIA
Tazewell County Career & Technical Center in Tazewell
SkillsUSA membership: 133 students and teachers
Project: Students will make improvements and upgrades at Linconshire Park, where a new recreation complex and wellness trail have been installed to serve the community. Students will build two gazebos, six picnic tables and multiple benches so that citizens can enjoy a well-developed walking trail in a peaceful, attractive setting, complete with rest and picnic areas provided by Tazewell students.
