ACTE Offers Video Contest to promote CTE Month
The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) is searching for student filmmakers to create a 29-second Public Service Announcement (PSA) to publicize CTE Month during February 2009. Secondary and postsecondary students in film, video and production classes are invited to submit video PSAs based on 2009 CTE Month's theme, CTE: Building Blocks for a Successful Career and emphasizing the importance of CTE. The deadline to enter is October 31, 2008. ACTE is partnering with SchoolTube, a safe, moderated Web site for students, to host this year's contest (www.Schooltube.com). Students will upload videos to SchoolTube's Web site, in addition to sending broadcast-quality versions to ACTE, and a panel of marketing and media professionals will judge the entries. ACTE will announce the winners during its Annual Convention, December 4-6 in Charlotte, N.C. The first place students will receive a $750 prize and the school will receive one complimentary copy of Apple's Final Cut Studio 2, a professional video-editing suite, which Apple is donating for the contest. The second place students will receive $250 and one complimentary copy of Apple's Final Cut Studio 2 for the school. First-and second-place videos will be publicized on the Internet and may air on television. The complete rules and copies of copyright assignment and release forms are available at: www.acteonline.org/contest For more information or questions about submissions, please contact onlinemedia@acteonline.org.

Your School can be
a Skill Connect Field Test Site!
SkillsUSA is known for providing real-life application of skills. In fact, SkillsUSA has been assessing technical skills for more than 40 years to standards developed by 1,200 corporations, labor unions, trade associations and businesses. With the Work Force Ready System, we can now provide an on-ramp to other professional certifications and pave the way ahead for our future American work force.
The SkillsUSA Work Force Ready System provides assessments for career and technical education that are supported by industry, education and policy leaders. Available in more than 46 areas, Skill Connect Assessments will offer reliable evaluation of technical knowledge and skill. They are supported by a comprehensive administrative system and can be used for end of unit, end of course or end of program, depending on your curriculum.
These online assessments that are much more than electronic versions of a paper-pencil test. Items are in the form of multiple choice, true or false, fill-in-the-blank, drag-and-drop and hotspot. Each assessment consists of approximately 50 items and takes about 60 minutes to complete. Items are delivered randomly from an item bank.
Field-testing for the assessments continues this fall as SkillsUSA collaborates with a team of psychometricians to ensure reliability. Instructors for field test sites are prepared through a short web conference, and additional support is provided, in order to make this an interesting and educational experience. This is a great way to test-drive the assessments to decide if they will be effective at your school. To request a list of assessments or to volunteer as a field-test instructor or site, please contact Bruce Potter at 703-737-0638 or bpotter@skillsusa.org.
