Lesson Plan on History of the American Worker and Emerging Technologies
SkillsUSA has produced two videos that make an effective classroom lesson and related activities for technical students in many occupational areas. Both videos are included on one DVD and each runs approximately four minutes. History of the American Worker depicts the struggles and successes of American workers from the arrival of craftsmen on the Mayflower to the present. Emerging Technologies shows students how the skills of the work force have changed since the time of the covered wagon. See how today’s high tech industries demand well-trained workers who have top-notch skills.

These video clips can be used as a lesson on the history of the American workers and to help students glimpse forward at how future technology may affect workers in their occupation. Showing these video clips can be an interesting conversation starter or the basis for one or two class lessons with handouts that can be used for in-class work or as take-home assignments. The Lesson Plan is also a good resource for integrating academics based on the career cluster knowledge and skills. The student handouts can be used in class, as a take-home assignment or as the basis for another type of presentation such as an oral report, group project, etc. The Video Scripts can be used for your own talking points or as the basis for a student presentation.
