Skill Connect Assessments

Tim LawrenceAs your year begins to wind to a close, we hope each of you has had a fulfilling and eventful school year.

This month, I've been on a state leadership and skills conference "mega tour" and every conference I've been to has been well planned and executed. Many have enjoyed record attendance. At the end of the month, I'll have been to seven and other SkillsUSA national staff to 11. It has been great to see excited students, caring advisors, industry support and, in many instances, top-level state education officials learning about and supporting career and technical education.

This will be the last monthly Active Advisor Newsletter until September 2012. We're looking forward to seeing many of you in Kansas City this June. Thank you for all you do to lift up students and change lives for the better.

Alumni Membership Incentives Reminder
AlumniThe Alumni Coordinating Committee is offering two incentives this year. One is for SkillsUSA advisors who sign up alumni from their chapters and the second for students who join alumni. For every five members an advisor gets to join the SkillsUSA Alumni & Friends Association, he or she will be entered into a drawing for a VISA gift card. For each student who joins the Alumni & Friends Association, he or she will be entered into a drawing for a VISA gift card.

To be officially entered into the drawing, the advisor must have students register and join online at: www.skillsusa.org/supporters/alumni.shtml. The advisor must then send an email to Niki Clausen at nclausen@skillsusa.org. The email must contain the advisor's name, school and state, and a list (for verification) of the students (first and last names) who joined as alumni. Remember that graduating seniors qualify to join during their senior year. Former SkillsUSA students are also eligible, provided they are not members already. These students must register through their former advisor to be counted as part of that advisor's entry. Students who join are automatically entered into the drawing. Students may only join once.

Deadline for entry into the drawing is June 1. Contact Niki Clausen at 703-737-0639 or via email, if you have questions.

National Courtesy Corps (NCC) Needs You
Courtesy CorpsWe encourage advisors and students to sign up to come to the NLSC as National Courtesy Corps members. There you will be assisting in the setup and take-down and everything in between at the NLSC. This year, because of the change in days when the conference is held and the need for a rapid move-out, we will require as many as possible to assist in the effort to move out quickly.

We request members arrive on Wednesday (6/20/12), by 5 p.m., so they can start to work on the contest areas on Thursday (6/21/12). They will depart from conference on Thursday (6/28/12).

All NCC participants will be housed at Park University Campus in Parkville, Mo. This campus is about 12-15 minutes away from Bartle Hall.

The advisors must supervise the students. SkillsUSA will develop an individual schedule for each student and advisor listing work assignments, breaks, free time, etc., and there will be a separate advisor session to review their duties and responsibilities.

For more information about Courtesy Corps, please go to: www.skillsusa.org/events/courtesy.shtml. To register go to: www.smartreg.com/webreg/SKILLSUSA12/ and then follow the instructions.

National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) Specific Items
For those of you who may be attending the NLSC in Kansas City this June, the following items may be of interest to you.

Lowe's Giveaway Pavillion NLSC2012
Once again, we are excited to announce that we will be giving away backpacks, T-shirts and official conference pins at the Lowe's Giveaway Pavilion. These items will only be distributed to paid registered attendees who have a voucher to claim their items. State directors will receive only enough vouchers to give to each paid, registered attendee in their delegations. There will be no extras.

Conference Registration Requirements
To participate in official conference meetings and events, all attendees (advisors included) must register for the conference. A registration fee ($125) is required in order to obtain the official conference badge that allows access to SkillsUSA conference opening and awards ceremonies, contestant meetings and debriefings, seminars, delegate sessions and planned entertainment.

NLSC Attire at Champions Night
SkillsUSA Night and Champions Night at Power & Light, the dress code is as follows: all attendees are required to wear a SkillsUSA logo shirt. This can be a state T-shirt or polo shirt. As with all SkillsUSA conference events, the official conference name badge/lanyard and holder are also required for entrance.

Blood Drive at NLSC
There will again be a blood drive as part of the NLSC sponsored by the Kansas City Community Blood Center and it will be held on Wednesday, June 27, Bartle Hall, Room 2105 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Kansas City Community Blood Center hopes to receive at least 55 pints of blood from the drive. There were 42 first-time donors.

As an extra incentive, if the Kansas City Community Blood Center registers at least 60 donors this year, all donors will be entered into a drawing for six $25 gift cards. The gift cards will be sent to those six individuals after they return home.

If you or your students are in Kansas City, please try to take the time to stop by and participate in this worthy cause and help save a life. You may also register for an appointment ahead of time at: www.esavealifenow.org and enter the sponsor code "SkillsUSA." Anyone who signs up for an appointment in advance can enter the raffle for gift cards twice.
