Courtesy Corps Auction Fund-Raising Activity Reminder

June 1st, 2010

We need everyone’s help with the National Courtesy Corps annual auction. The Auction Committee is collecting items and will hold an auction on June 25th to raise money to help support the National Courtesy Corps. As you know, the Courtesy Corps members work all week during NLSC in many areas helping set up/tear down, run errands and assist the conference management committees and national staff wherever needed.

If you have items that you would like to donate to sell at the auction, please either mail them to the attention of: NCC Auction, SkillsUSA, 14001 SkillsUSA Way, Leesburg, VA 20176, or take them with you to the conference and drop them at Courtesy Corps headquarters in Lobby 3500. Student projects from schools can also be donated.

Please also plan to attend the auction and join in the fun. Remember, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, so be sure and clean out your closets and garages and send us some treasures.

National Courtesy Corps

March 1st, 2010

Attention state association directors…We continue to work hard to improve the National Courtesy Corps (NCC) experience at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC). However, we need your help to make this all work. Missouri has committed 85 of the 150 members we need for 2010. The remaining number will come from the rest of the states. Last year, we only received about 30 members from outside of Missouri.

As you know, the NCC is an important part of the success of the NLSC. If you have members who have been part of the NCC, please have them continue. If you don’t, please encourage them to become a part of this special group. Below are some of the changes for 2010.

  1. This year, we will not start the move into Bartle Hall until Thursday evening. Because of this, we will need the help of the Courtesy Corps sooner. Therefore, we are asking the members to arrive on Saturday (6/19/10) by 5:00 pm so they can start to work on the floor of Bartle Hall on Sunday (6/20/10).
  2. Last year, we had for the first time a team of Massachusetts students who were part of the National Courtesy Corps doing research at NLSC. The data we collected was very useful to SkillsUSA. Again, we will need eight students with good communication skills to be part of this survey team. If you have students who may be interested, please contact Bruce Potter.
  3. All NCC participants will be housed at Park University Campus in Parkville, Mo. This campus is about 12-15 minutes away from Bartle Hall, and traffic is not heavy en route.
  4. This year, we will enlist the help of our adult NCC participants by assigning them duties and responsibilities as they work with the students. For these advisors, there will be a session to review their duties and responsibilities as they work with the students.
  5. We will develop an individual schedule for each student and advisor listing work assignments, breaks, free time and other items that go along with their time at the conference.
  6. Dorothy Loges from Missouri will serve as the NCC chair again, and we look forward to working with her.

If you have any questions, please contact Bruce Potter at bpotter@skillsusa.org or by phone at 703-737-0638.

National Courtesy Corps

March 1st, 2009

We’re looking for a few good members!

The National Courtesy Corps (NCC) is an elite group of high school and college/postsecondary students and advisors selected to represent their state delegations. These individuals are afforded the opportunities to build a network of industry and educational resources while gaining skills, leadership qualities, developing friendships and having fun in the setup, operation and tear down of the SkillsUSA Championships. The NCC is designed to be a learning/working experience.

Students, instructors and alumni requesting to serve on the NCC must be current SkillsUSA members. Each chapter sending students must also send an advisor who will assist with supervision of his/her students as well as serve as an NCC member. All participants must be approved by his/her state association director. The NLSC registration form must be completed with appropriate signatures and submitted by the state association director. NLSC registration fees for the NCC are waived. In addition, meals and housing expenses are provided. The only cost to NCC members is transportation to and from Kansas City.

This year, all NCC members will be housed at Park University. No participants will be allowed to stay in hotels with their state delegations.

NCC members are not allowed to compete, judge contests, run for office or participate in any state activities (during work hours) or perform any duties other than those assigned by the NCC Management Committee. NCC members typically work eight-hour days Monday through the closing ceremonies on Friday night. Finally, NCC members must agree to abide by the SkillsUSA Code of Conduct.

SkillsUSA will accept the first 150 qualified registrants, based on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage all states to consider sending students to this elite group.  States are not required to conduct state-level courtesy corps competitions to enter students.
