Alumni Training and National Conference

April 15th, 2011

The Alumni & Friends Association will be offering alumni training on June 19-20, 2011 at the National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in Kansas City, Mo. The training will cover how to start a state alumni association, how to plan alumni activities, volunteer training, inclusion and diversity training and professional development. The training will cost $30 and includes two lunches, a training T-shirt and resource materials. The registration deadline for the training is June 1.

We are also seeking dedicated individuals to assist with the NLSC. Alumni who volunteer daily at the conference can have their conference registration fee waived. Alumni help is needed on the booth team, leadership team, Championships team and special services team. While at conference, alumni volunteers will also have the opportunity to network with partners, members, staff and other alumni, will have some meals provided and will get to participate in conference events. This is a great way for alumni members to stay involved and continue the SkillsUSA journey. The registration deadline to be an alumni volunteer is June 1.

For more information about the alumni training and being an alumni volunteer, please contact Niki Clausen at 703-737-0639 or by email to nclausen@skillsusa.org. For more information, go to www.skillsusa.org/supporters/alumninlsc.shtml.

Harley-Davidson Raffle at SkillsUSA National Conference

April 1st, 2011

SkillsUSA will be raffling off a Dyna Super Glide Motorcycle at the 2011 National Conference Awards Ceremony, Friday, June 24 in Kansas City, Missouri. This event is made possible thanks to a generous donation by Harley-Davidson Motor Co., Inc.

SkillsUSA programs and the Alumni & Friends Association will be the beneficiaries of this year’s raffle. State alumni groups have an opportunity to sell the raffle tickets and raise money for their own state group or to support the national alumni association. Tickets are $5 each or five tickets for $20.

Adding excitement to the raffle again this year, Justin Barnes of American Chopper fame, will come to Kansas City and custom paint the bike. Justin will also be doing a paint demonstration this year at the National Conference.

The winner does not need to be present for the drawing. However, the winner will be responsible for picking up the motorcycle at a local Harley-Davidson dealer in his or her community. Visit this link to order your tickets.

What do Graduates Say about SkillsUSA?

March 15th, 2011

“While in high school, SkillsUSA (then VICA) gave me the confidence I needed to come out of my ‘shell’ and to become a successful business owner, a teacher and now program coordinator for the largest two-year college in this state. Even today, I can personally relate to the shyest student in the classroom thanks to SkillsUSA.”

That’s one of 49 quotes received to the question “What was your experience in SkillsUSA” in an online survey of SkillsUSA Alumni & Friends conducted last month. Here’s one of the 43 replies to the question “What have you been doing since your involvement?”

“I am a Commander in the Navy assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. I will be a Commanding Officer on my next tour. VICA (now SkillsUSA) helped me become a professional and fostered a desire for continued education. I recently completed my Master’s Degree.”

While we received many remarkable responses from the 14-question survey, we can’t possibly cover them all including those to the question “What was your favorite SkillsUSA memory?” It appears many of the alumni went into teaching at some point during their careers. That squares with the reactions to a couple of other questions. When asked what they would like to have the alumni association provide its members, 79.4 percent said “A chance to volunteer at state or national events.” And, when asked “Why would you stay involved and join the Alumni & Friends Association,” 77.8 percent of the respondents said “to be giving back to the program.” This is a group to be proud of.

Webinars are a Wonderful Way to Travel

March 1st, 2011

SkillsUSA is very big on communications, and the national office has been “webinar central” the past month. We’ve held four online conferences: two for state association directors; another for alumni; and, the webinar for SkillsUSA members during SkillsUSA Week.

On February 8, students and teachers from 18 schools nationwide tuned into the SkillsUSA Week inclusion and diversity webinar on “Respecting All Perspectives.” Board President Russ Hoffbauer addressed the group saying how pleased he is that SkillsUSA is discussing inclusion and diversity because this is also an important issue to business.

The February 4 webinar with 16 state association directors was a discussion on SkillsUSA’s online conference registration system. During their August meeting, the state directors asked us to make our registration system more user-friendly, and our consultant, Mark Williams, has been doing just that. He’s even created a series of online training modules to walk users through the process. Reactions from the participants were extremely positive including posted notes that said: “Love the changes.”

On February 17, the state association directors’ executive committee conducted an hour-long webinar for the 18 directors who signed in. This was a follow-up report on their meeting in January including: minutes; proposed Constitutional amendments; the improvement of services to states by the SkillsUSA Store and stock of core products; and, the August Professional Development Conference. There were also updates from national staff on Vision 2020, state association insurance, national conference updates, membership mega prizes and an April membership registration task force to include some non-SkillsUSA instructors to help us improve online registration by next school year.

And, on February 15, the SkillsUSA Alumni & Friends Association held its first membership service webinar on enhanced communications. Three of our alumni members served as the expert speakers on topics including job interview techniques, communication and asking questions and serving as a mentor. There were 18 participants, and it seemed a propitious start to this kind of membership service.

All the webinars have been archived, so we strongly encourage those who could not participate “live” to go to our website to view them.

Alumni Membership Increase Incentives Program

Then, the advisor needs to e-mail Niki Clausen his/her name, school and a list of students who joined. Please contact Niki Clausen with questions about this program.

February 15th, 2011

The SkillsUSA Alumni and Friends Association is sponsoring a Pin Design Contest again this year. Advisor Alumni Membership Incentive

January 14th, 2011

The Alumni Coordinating Committee is offering an incentive to SkillsUSA advisors who sign up alumni from their chapter. For every five members an advisor gets to join the SkillsUSA Alumni & Friends Association, he or she will be entered into a drawing for a VISA gift card.

To be officially entered into the drawing, the advisor must have students register and join online at www.skillsusa.org/supporters/alumni.shtml. The advisor must then send an e-mail to Niki Clausen at nclausen@skillsusa.org. The e-mail must contain the advisor’s name, school and state, and a list (for verification) of the students (first and last names) who joined as alumni. Remember that graduating seniors qualify to join during their senior year. Former SkillsUSA students are also eligible, provided they are not members already. These students must register through their former advisor to be counted as part of that advisor’s entry

Deadline for entry into the drawing is June 1. Contact Niki Clausen at 703-737-0639 or via e-mail, if you have questions.
