Help Sign 100,000 Names to the Perkins Petition

April 1st, 2009

The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and Participant Media have joined forces to advocate for Perkins funds. You can help by signing the petition and asking your friends and colleagues to sign today!

Over the past few years, the primary federal funding stream for career and technical education, the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act (Perkins), has been gradually decreased, despite increased student enrollments, equipment costs and need for skilled workers.

To sign the petition and pass the word to call upon Congress to fund the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act at no less than $1.7 billion in Fiscal Year 2010, go to www.takepart.com/pressurecooker/petition2.php.

Unity During SkillsUSA Week and CTE Month Celebration

February 15th, 2009

It’s February, so it’s CTE Month once again, a time for all ten of the career and technical student organizations (CTSOs) and related professional associations to talk about the value of career and technical education and SkillsUSA week was celebrated February 8-14.

In honor of SkillsUSA Week, on February 10, we held a great Web Conference. The conference was 30 minutes long, and it covered a variety of topics, including our connection to the new Obama administration, new programs and activities, use of our advocacy site to reach Congress, the media and special messages from our national high school and college student presidents. The Web Conference has been archived, and it can be viewed at the following link. The link goes to a full audio and video version of the broadcast, and it can be paused or forwarded/reversed during viewing. Go to http://web.ganconference.com/?meeting=3913885

The CTSOs have already requested a meeting with the new U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, and we’ve also requested an appointment with the head of the Office of Management and Budget. In addition, we’ve made several proposals to the administration relative to the CTSOs.

I’ve also met with Margaret Romer, the person handling scheduling at the U.S. Department of Education, and I’ll be joining the directors of the other CTSOs in submitting a list of national events for the administration to consider in the president’s and secretary’s schedules.

On January 29, on behalf of all of the student organizations and the Association of Career and Technical Education (ACTE), SkillsUSA sent the official news release for CTE Month to 1,400 news outlets nationwide using VOCUS, our online public relations contact system. Another media advisory went out on February 6 to nearly 400 education publications using the same system. The releases have generated some reaction. I did an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune Review last week and a story was published on February 8. The link to the story is: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/s_610740.html. And, on February 5, Tom Holdsworth did an interview on CTE with a representative from Edutopia, a publication and Web site, on “what works in public education” published by the George Lucas Foundation.

ACTE’s Cliff Weiss Essay Contest

January 15th, 2009

The Association for Career and Technical Education is again holding the Cliff Weiss Essay contest in memory of former ACTE Senior Director of Communications Cliff Weiss. This year’s topic for high school and college/postsecondary students is “What would you tell President Obama about your CTE experience?”

ACTE wants to collect student stories on the impact CTE has in their lives and use this information to help educate the public and policymakers on the importance of CTE. A high school and college/postsecondary student winner will each receive an award of $250, in addition to having their essay published in ACTE’s Techniques magazine.

The essays should be between 400-600 words, in Microsoft Word format, one entry per person, and e-mailed by Friday, February 13, 2009 to essaycontest@acteonline.org. For complete rules on the contest, please visit www.acteonline.org/content.aspx?id=2572 or contact Sabrina Kidwai at skidwai@acteonline.org. Winners will be announced at the end of February. When submitting an entry to ACTE – please also copy Jane Short at SkillsUSA atjshort@skillsusa.org.

Also While in Charlotte

January 1st, 2009

SkillsUSA had a good ACTE conference December 4 through 6. There were lots of visitors to our trade show booth. This year, we featured SkillsUSA’s program and the Work Force Ready System. Interest was high in both areas. According to staff, there was a steady stream of people coming by to see the demonstration of the Skill Connect Assessments. More than 30 people attended the 9 a.m. workshop on Skill Connect Saturday morning. Other staff members were all busy in the trade show and giving four additional workshops on the Champions for Change vulnerable community pilots, service learning, SkillsUSA programs and on how to use the combination of CSEP, PDP and employability skills assessments.

Of course, one of the best parts of any ACTE conference as far as I’m concerned is having student national officers there representing the organization and getting to spend time with the staff. Brittany Moon, high school division president and Zachary Ferguson, college/postsecondary secretary were the officers with us, and they did a great job.

Brittany was also with me on Thursday, December 4 while I visited some businesses in Charlotte. Kelly Persons of Lowe’s set up the visits and traveled with us for the full day. First, we visited Duke Energy where they’re interested in supporting initiatives in teacher training, sustainability and alternative fuels and diversity. Next, we visited Rodgers-Dooley Construction, one of the premier commercial builders in the area. Both firms are interested in the SkillsUSA program, but their focus is on the states where they do business: North and South Carolina, Ohio and Indiana. For its part, Lowe’s talked with me about expanding its national partnership as well as some new initiatives to increase support at the state level all across the country.
