Georgia State Conference

March 12th, 2010

I’m attending the Georgia State Leadership and Skills Conference in Atlanta. Gayle and Sonny are running a great show down here. The opening ceremony was powerful and the state officers – and the two national officers from Georgia, Zia and Eve – were just plain excellent on stage. They have about 2,000 attending and over 5,000 participating in the Career Expo.

One of the really cool things they are doing is broadcasting live via the Internet. Check out the video stream today at mms://mediam1.gpb.org/np-skillsusa-live

New Day for Opening Ceremony and Official Start of the SkillsUSA Championships

January 15th, 2010

Even though SkillsUSA returns to Kansas City June 20-25, 2010 for the 46th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), the first conference of this decade opens with a new schedule. For the first time ever, our Opening Ceremony and the official opening of the SkillsUSA Championships are being combined. All the excitement of both events will take place on Wednesday, June 23 at 7pm at Kemper Arena. The Champions Festival will be held on Tuesday evening in an exciting new venue. Delegations should still plan to arrive by Monday as the rest of the schedule for the week remains the same.

Greetings from ACTE!

November 19th, 2009

This week I’m attending the conference for the Association of Career and Technical Education (ACTE) in Nashville, Tenn. We had a great board meeting and CMI at Tennessee State University yesterday.

I’m in opening session now.  I’m very proud to see Ed Mellott, former SkillsUSA Board of Directors member, leading the session as the 2009 ACTE president. I’m also proud to see the Tennessee SkillsUSA students as welcome/greeters to welcome all to opening session this morning.

Chef Jeff Henderson speaks at the Opening Session.

The keynote speaker of the opening session is Chef Jeff Henderson. He’s a former prison inmate, now mentorand star of the Food Network program, The Chef Jeff Project.

I’m looking forward to the workshops today ‑ including two sessions on the Work Force Ready System. Make sure to review  the ACTE Staff schedule for other SkillsUSA workshops throughout the convention.
