Ratings are in for WLTI. They’re Up and They’re Good

November 1st, 2009

The students attending the Washington Leadership Training Institute wrote comments such as: “WLTI is one of the best things that has happened in my life” and “The experience was life changing and amazing.” I guess that’s why students ranked their conference satisfaction surveys at 4.55 on a scale of one to five with five being the highest. In the 23 areas receiving a ranking, none received a score below a four. Advisors had similar reactions. Their overall ranking was 4.53, and they wrote comments such as “I felt this was worth the work I put in” and “Transportation, sessions, outings – all were outstanding for me and my students.”

Deb Tripp ran our WLTI conference debriefing session with staff recently. She said one of the secrets to the ratings was that there was something new or different in each day’s schedule to keep the program fresh and relevant. She also reported that the community service activity during WLTI produced 406 letters to service personnel and were sent to Military Mission for delivery.

The week following WLTI, students at one school in South Carolina sent an additional 100 letters to Military Mission. We certainly struck a chord there. Two more comments from students: “Arlington and the Pentagon were WOW beyond explaining” and “I believe SkillsUSA should look into donating a tree to Arlington Cemetery. It’s something we can do that will be there a very long time.”

More Guidance from the Experts for Skill Connect Assessments

November 1st, 2009

The Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for the Champions for Change project met on October 15 at the offices of GAERF (the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation) in Reston, Virginia for its fall meeting. Every time we meet with these experts from industry, education (including board member Wayne Kutzer) and services to vulnerable communities, we learn new things that we put into practice as quickly as we can. And, our recent survey data of the TAC proves it. One area where the Champions for Change project is highly rated by the committee is in listening to and acting on the advice of the members.

Among the significant recommendations at the meeting: offer a free “test drive” of the assessments to teachers and administrators; tried and true methods for updating assessments as the process proceeds; strategies for building industry awareness; and, making clear how the Skill Connect assessments fit in with some of the other assessments in the field. Thanks go to Eileen Cassidy, director, GAERF, for hosting the meeting.

Highlights

November 1st, 2009
  • I’m delighted to report that Niki Clausen will be our new full-time alumni coordinator. Niki will start in her new position on November 2. She brings a wealth of background and experience as a former SkillsUSA national officer, a culinary teacher, a SkillsUSA chapter advisor, Oregon state association director and as a member of the national alumni coordinating council. Thanks go to both Lowe’s and Air Products for their support in making this happen.
  • The October 6 ACTE (Association for Career and Technical Education) “Cooking Up a Future” Congressional Reception on Capitol Hill was quite successful this year. According to ACTE, at least four members of Congress and staff from over 100 congressional offices attended during the two-hour event. SkillsUSA was one of four student organizations participating and the only one doing a demonstration. Thanks to Chef Christine Gloninger and Chef Frans Hagen, three students from Annandale High School were preparing and serving crepes to the guests. They ran the exhibit to visit and everyone did.
  • We had a great conference call with Brian Spiro and Tim Humes of Carhartt to discuss their future support for SkillsUSA including Carhartt becoming a clothing supplier through E-Group.
  • During our meeting on October 13, the Architectural Woodwork Institute committed to increasing its support for SkillsUSA and helping form new chapters in states  where AWI has member companies.
  • The Senate confirmed Brenda Dann-Messier on October 5 to be the new assistant secretary for vocational adult education in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE). The assistant secretary has a strong commitment to adult learning and helping students to transition into postsecondary education. We look forward to working with her.

ACTE Pre-conference Session – Chapter Management Institute

November 1st, 2009

State Farm is sponsoring a Chapter Management Institute (CMI) that will provide instructors with the tools they need to develop, manage and advise a SkillsUSA Chapter in their school or classroom. Participants explore the mission of SkillsUSA; learn to use the multitude of resources available and engage in hands-on activities. The training utilizes interactive sessions and provides answers to questions such as: How do I get students involved? What is the best way to organize our activities? What does a chapter set out to do? What is a Program of Work? What materials are available to help students? This is a must for beginning or novice advisors wanting to start a chapter or better manage an existing chapter.

Take advantage of this low-cost training to learn how SkillsUSA can help your students to succeed – on the job and in life. The training will be held on November 18 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Tennessee State University – TSU Avon Williams Campus, Room 313, 330 10th Avenue, North, Nashville, Tenn.

Virginia State Officers Issue Nationwide Food Bank

November 1st, 2009

Virginia’s CTSO state officers, including SkillsUSA, are conducting a food drive that they hope can make a major impact on food banks across the country. The nation’s food banks are experiencing critical shortages because of a tough economy, which has resulted in fewer donations. Their challenge to other states is to help food banks nationwide by having state officer teams and local chapters of CTSOs work to see who can collect the most canned goods.

This project runs through December 30—a critical time for food banks across the nation. State officer teams should contact local chapters in their state and challenge them to collect food for any area food bank. Simply ask chapters to donate food to their local food bank and obtain a receipt for the number of pounds of food donated. State officer teams for SkillsUSA or any CTSO can participate.

At the end of the collection period, local chapters will submit their food bank receipts to their state officer team. The state officer team or state director will then submit all forms for that state back to Virginia to see which state has collected the most. The largest state organization winner will then be recognized by the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE).

Chapters should attach their receipts to a Local Chapter Donation Form. State officer teams will then combine their local chapter forms and submit a State Chapter Donation Form with a copy of the local chapter forms for counting. Submit to: Sandy Mills, Lord Fairfax Community College, 173 Skirmisher Lane, Middletown, Virginia, 22645 or Fax to (540) 868-7100. Download both donation forms at the following Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=278223665342&index=1

If you have questions concerning this project, contact Sandy Mills at smills@lfcc.edu or 540-868-7043 or Ann Craddock at abc@vahosa.org. Forms will be accepted from any state organization until January 15, 2010.
