Outreach to the Incoming Administration

January 15th, 2009

The eight Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) have reached out to the Obama presidential transition team and the transition team has reached back. On January 8, I met with the executive directors of four of the CTSOs to compare notes on what we would like the president-elect’s administration to consider relative to career and technical education and the student organizations.

As requested by our contact on the transition team, we crafted a letter requesting the start of an ongoing dialogue with the new administration. It does sound pretty powerful when we say that we’re writing on behalf of 2.5 million students and 50,000 teachers in the CTSOs. The letter went out. The transition team wanted a face-to-face meeting with us but – given the level of security in Washington at the moment – it was decided that a conference call would be best. We’re optimistic and this is a hopeful start.

It’s Going to be a Month of “Excitement”

January 15th, 2009

This week is the ninth annual “Week of Excitement” when staff gets together for strategic planning. The staff completed an online questionnaire that gave us a good jump-start on the very important SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis. While we’ve gone through the SWOT process in the past, this is the first time we’ve done it online; and that’s one reason we held only a single-day meeting as a full staff. In addition to staff input, we received data from students, teachers, B&I partners and state association directors. The opinions of all our stakeholder groups will be considered in our FY10-11 strategic plan. The balance of this week was spent in department and special committee meetings. Almost immediately following, we take the draft of the plan to the State Association Director Executive Committee for meetings beginning January 21.

The next step is Vision 2020 following the state association director meeting in Ft. Lauderdale on January 24. Stakeholders will include an instructor, two students, a school administrator, an alumni member, a Job Corps educator and several members of the SkillsUSA Board of Directors. Steve Pierz, strategic program manager, common components, Caterpillar, will be facilitating the process. He knows his stuff, and it has been great working with him. He’s helped us devise the questionnaires for the field and staff and, I firmly believe that high-level vision SkillsUSA will have for 2020 and the sub-goals to get us there are going to be very useful to the organization. As you might be able to tell, I’m looking forward to the meeting.

Highlights

January 15th, 2009
  • Membership continues to be encouraging. As of today, we’re up about 4,000 members over the same date last year.
  • On Friday, January 9, we had a half-hour conference call with representatives of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation is interested in SkillsUSA for a number of reasons, but at the moment its focus appears to be on transition from high school to college or credentials, particularly among vulnerable youth. And, there’s also a lot of interest in the Work Force Ready System and the Skill Connect Assessments. We’re scheduling a follow-up call.
  • We’re now working with a firm called Automated Graphic Systems, Inc. to develop online PR and promotion for the SkillsUSA WorldTeam. The firm is also working on some viral fundraising and awareness. Thanks go to Lowe’s for underwriting PR activity for WorldTeam under the terms of its grant. SkillsUSA’s own media press kit is nearing completion as well.
  • And, finally, on January 7, we had a conference call with all six of the vulnerable community pilot sites under the Champions for Change project. They’ve got some great things going and several have or will soon be participating in state and district conferences.
