Technology Demonstrations
To introduce competitions to instructors, students and state association leaders, SkillsUSA is hosting five technology demonstrations. Technology demonstrations are driven by industry and, unless otherwise specified, the events will be demonstrated by industry-appointed individuals in the following skill areas:
Industrial Maintenance Technology: Teams of two students must demonstrate skill knowledge in electrical and mechanical systems. The teams will be tested on their understanding of basic electricity, motor control, industrial electronics, basic and advanced mechanical systems and subsystems including measurement and assembly.
Mobile Robotics Technology: Students assemble, set-up, manage and maintain mechanical systems within a mobile robot as well as install, operate and trouble shoot mobile robot control systems.
Robotics Engineering Technology: This two-member team competition requires students to design and build two robots capable of solving a specific problem. The competition uses a standard robotic platform and presents a problem to students to be solved using the engineering process.
Structural Steel Design: Contestants use their drafting skills and knowledge of steel construction to solve a problem using board drafting, two-dimensional CAD software or three-dimensional modeling software. The contest includes a written test and a computer-generated problem.
Sustainability Solutions: In this competition, teams must develop a project plan built on the need for developing a sustainability process, concept, device or structure. Teams must research and document their idea process and present both the idea and the need for the project. Projects should be built as a tabletop display and may focus on idea-generating discussions on sustainability. A notebook and audiovisual presentation are required. Connection to the community and/or business and industry in the research, planning and building process is encouraged. Winners will be recognized Friday morning at the SkillsUSA State Association Directors’ breakfast.
